Today Dark Tea returns with a new track + video and announce their 2nd self titled album out April 30th on Fire Talk.  While much of the art of this time is focused on the inescapable present, Dark Tea sets out to do the opposite: create an escape from the din and set up camp until the sun comes up. The 2nd record from the transmutational band kicks off with pedal steel, bar room piano, and emotionally direct lyrics that take the listener along the hero’s journey, from the abyss all the way through atonement. The writing and recording of Dark Tea took more of a collaborative approach this time around, as the record features over 20 musicians, and was recorded in Brooklyn and Philadelphia. Mostly split between sessions with Matt Barrick ( The Walkmen, Muzz) and NYC Punk icon Sasha Stroud,  a veteran of the punk scene in New York. Stroud’s massive and spacious recording space give the recordings a life of their own, with her technical mastery captured the sound of a live band at its peak. Lush production, expanded arrangements and at the record’s core, ring leader Gary Canino’s raw and expansive songwriting. “Dark Tea” is a dusty exploration of the internal backed by your favorite rock and roll band capturing the wavering perception of time and the impermanence of love. It might occur to you this could be a long strange trip of a record, you’d be right.

Described by The FADER as "rich and wide open" Dark Tea has seen praise by outlets like UPROXX, Brooklyn Vegan, Post Trash, Ears to Feed and more.

First single “Highway Mile” is equal parts introspection and nostalgia, and a distillation of the album’s strengths. Recorded and mixed by Matt Barrick (The Walkmen, Muzz), the arrangement features Bacharach influenced trumpets, a guitar solo indebted to Maurice Deebank, and a elegant drum performance by Barrick. Guitarist and singer Gary Canino sings “I’d walk over a Highway Mile just to get to you,” and by the track’s conclusion, you’re walking right there with him.

Gary Canino on the track "Highway Mile was born from a memory of walking on Long Island in 2007, truly a land of no sidewalks. With that starting point in mind, the second verse cancels out the past by evoking the present day. Some of those old feelings never really go away...”

Dark Tea, the solo project of LA-based Gary Canino, will release their new self-titled, full-length studio album on April 30, 2021, on Fire Talk Records. The 12-track collection expands the group’s sound from their previous LP (also called Dark Tea), further exploring Canino’s cinematic visions and twangy folk narratives.

Born and raised in Huntington, NY, Gary’s quiet Long Island youth gave him access to all of the pleasures and distractions of New York City. After college at the University of Virginia, Canino made his way to Brooklyn in 2011. He played bass with post-punk revivalists Rips, recording and touring their debut album with Austin Brown (Parquet Courts), forming Dark Tea in 2016. Fire Talk, a label known for left-field rockers like Pure X and Dehd, issued the first Dark Tea LP in 2019, mixed by Jarvis Taveniere of Woods and featuring memorable guitar work from Meg Duffy of Hand Habits.

The new Dark Tea album, recorded by Matt Barrick (The Walkmen) and NYC punk veteran Sasha Stroud, is a document of deeply personal, interior reflections, contrasted with the wide open spaces of an idyllic American soundscape. Beyond the music, Gary channels his Cassavetes obsession by making videos for Dark Tea, Current Joys, and The Berries. It’s a continuation of the Dark Tea vision: creativity, commitment, nurturing a sense of wonder through the haze of nostalgia, while looking toward the future.
