Just Penelope Release New Single/Video, "Be Gentle"
Just Penelope is the Bloomington-based student trio of Ella Curiel (vocals/guitar), Ethan Cantrell (drums/vocals), and Drew Goforth (bass). On the precipice of autumn, Just Penelope announced their signing to Angel Tapes — Fire Talk Records’ emerging artists imprint home to fellow upstarts shower curtain, Jawdropped, Sleeper’s Bell, Retail Drugs and more — alongside their debut track. Today, Just Penelope return with their new single/video, “Be Gentle.”
The lone, tape-recorded strum of an acoustic guitar ushers in ‘Be Gentle,” with Curiel’s emotive vocals driving the single along its layered slow burn. “Be Gentle” pulls from the evergreen well of country-tinged alternative rock, propelled by instrumentation that swells alongside the track’s affecting core. “Maybe I just like when people look at me,” Curiel reflects as lap steel joins the lush bed of percussion, banjo, piano, upright bass and subtle synths. “Be Gentle” wears its heart on a flannel sleeve, channeling the heightened emotions of youth through crystalline production that punches well above its class.
Be on the lookout for more from Just Penelope this year.
