set dressing Announces Debut EP, Out 4/11, & Shares New Single/Video, "date line"

Today, set dressing — a Mandy, Indiana side-project represented only by an avatar — announces i can’t be alone tonite, their debut EP out April 11th via Fire Talk, and releases their new single/video, “date line.” i can’t be alone tonite soundtracks a venture into the dark unknown, combining cinematic synths, 80s-inflected percussion and striking samples to create its singular introductory statement. “date line” follows the “ominous, atmospheric” (Our Culture) debut single, “class valedictorian,” which was released last month to praise from Pitchfork, Brooklyn Vegan, and more.

“date line” substitutes its predecessor’s instrumental drones for propulsive percussion, an immediate redirection that shirks any notion of where set dressing are headed. Here, the atmospheric production that once took center stage instead ground swaths of pitch-shifted vocals, eclectic samples, and an irresistible groove. “I’ll put out the distant fires before they’ve chance to grow,” filtered vocals croon amidst skeletal percussion, “Don’t say it // Don’t say it // Don’t confess your love.”

set dressing emerges from the minds behind Mandy, Indiana — “one of the decade’s best new bands”  (Bandcamp) — and expands upon the group’s “visceral and strange” (The Quietus) industrial palette for one of expressive synths and vast instrumentation. i can’t be alone tonite presents an extension of the distinct world building displayed across i’ve seen a way, Mandy, Indiana’s acclaimed debut which was named one of 2023’s best albums by The New York Times, The Guardian, Loud & Quiet, Crack, DIY and more. i can’t be alone tonite marks the beginning of an unsettling journey, but it’s an adventure led by those familiar with treks toward uncharted territory.
