PATIO

BIO

Over the last four years, New York’s Patio (Alice Suh, Lindsey-Paige McCloy, Loren DiBlasi) have crafted a signature sound of minimal post-punk that radiates throughout their debut record, Essentials, out April 5 via Fire Talk.

Patio formed when non-musician Loren DiBlasi met actual musician Lindsey-Paige McCloy, and a simple joke about outdoor day drinking turned into a real-life band. The duo was soon joined by Alice Suh, a college friend of McCloy’s who had recently started drum lessons.

Instantly, the trio’s informal jams became sparse, melodic songs that grew organically from elegant rhythms, ethereal singing, and punk-inspired chants. In 2016, Birdtapes released their Luxury EP, 5 tracks of boredom, frustration, and mid-20s malaise.

Inspired by classic British post-punk, the songwriting of Cate LeBon, and the close-knit Brooklyn DIY community from which the band first sprouted, Patio now release their long-awaited debut full-length Essentials, a fundamental collection of new music for 2019.

Building upon the delicacy of the band’s prior work, Essentials presents fuller sounds, heightened emotions, and grander thematic complexity. Its 10 tracks are dark and introspective, yet hopeful, and often humorous—from rambling spoken word meditations to sparkling melodies and soaring riffs. Melodramatic and grotesque expressions abound, as do soft, subtle moments of quiet self-examination.

Patio has played with: Les Savy Fav, Ovlov, The Coathangers, White Lung, B Boys, Dehd, Deeper, Pylon, Bonny Doon, Lina Tullgren, Soccer Mommy, Crumb, Ian Sweet, Big Ups.

MUSIC

Patio - Collection
from $12.99

Raw, dark, and full of piercing emotional depth, Collection, the 2nd album from New York trio Patio, — produced and mixed by Nate Amos (Water from Your Eyes, This Is Lorelei) and mastered by longtime collaborator Amar Lal — is a radiant collage of shifting identities, sensory illusions, and deconstructed disco grooves. More complex and purposeful than the fragile post-punk of 2019 debut Essentials, the album reflects transition, conceived to flow from “day” (contemplative opener “The Sun”) to “night” (dub-inspired closer “Inheritance”). New sonic influences like disco (Donna Summer, The Bee Gees) and 2000s New York indie (Yeah Yeah Yeahs, Interpol) evoke freedom and euphoric joy — maintaining the band’s signature minimalism, When the members of Patio contemplated the inspirations for their long-awaited second album, Collection, they came up with an eclectic mood board comprising videos and images. A 1977 David Bowie performance of "Heroes” on Top of the Pops. Laura Branigan belting “Gloria” beneath a sea of disco balls. Masterpieces in marble by Michelangelo and Bernini. Jude Law in The Young Pope. Portraits of iconic superstars: A dapper Bryan Ferry, a melancholy Carmela Soprano, Bianca Jagger serving side-eye, and Andy Warhol eating a cheeseburger. “Collection” is out in September on Fire Talk.

Patio - Reality State
$1.99

A new B side from Patio’s “Essentials” session.

"Reality State" takes its title from a long and winding conversation with a cab driver on my way to band practice about his previous life selling real estate in Dubai and all of the artifice that accompanied it - fake names, glamorous backstories, renting a Rolex for an hour to wear to the client meeting to help seal the deal. Due to some sort of linguistic mix-up, he used the beautiful and compelling phrase "reality state" instead of "real estate" throughout his 23-minute Wild West tale.

This song is the older cousin of "New Reality" from Essentials and presents a different take on the cognitive dissonance of living in a world on fire. "Reality State" is more concerned with personal dynamics - identity construction and performance, building and maintaining connection, and making space for worry about small and big things at the same time. It's a snapshot of summer 2016-era simmering discomfort. As we dive into writing more and more new material, we're releasing this remaining track from the 2017 Essentials sessions as a bookend or a final celebratory balloon.
