The Spookfish - Black Hole

"Black Hole" is the debut studio album from The Spookfish. Dan Goldberg began performing as The Spookfish in 2007. Over the next several years Dan trekked around the globe living, recording and writing songs in far off places like Busan, South Korea, China, Berlin Germany, Russia and Portland Oregon. The project was an attempt to document dreams, subconscious melodies, and moments of strong intuition through sound as a personal journal. Upon arriving back in NYC in 2013 Dan began hosting shows in the Hudson Valley of New York State that involve a group of people hiking a mountain together and stopping at different landmarks (the peak, streams, the ruins of an old estate, etc...) to watch musicians perform. He has led 30 of these hikes between then and now eventually catching the eye of The New York Times which brought on a series of unfortunate turns, but that's another story. In January of 2017 Fire Talk re-issued a vast collection of material from Dan's journeys while embarking on a new endeavor. The Spookfish's debut studio album entitled "Black Hole" out April 21st on Fire Talk. Think John Fahey meets Black Moth Super Rainbow meets The Microphones.

After years side-manning for Long Island, Virginia and New York City’s finest undiscovered songwriters (D.B.B. Plays Cups, the Monte de Rosas Band, Andrea Schiavelli’s Eyes of Love) and contributing crisp basswork to the indomitable Brooklyn band Rips, the songwriter Gary Canino, submits to you a generous collection of country-inflected music under the Dark Tea moniker that, as the quotes from other Garys illustrate, honors the past while looking ahead. There is, as they say, a little something for everyone.
With Dark Tea, Gary emerges years later as a scientist does from her lab, having cracked the formula. The formula? Honor the listeners’ desire for both danger and comfort. And so, when a melody starts to wander from the marked trail, Gary soothes the listener’s ear with a simple one-four (“Variable Reward”). And so, when ambling verse figure disorients the listener, it repeats until she feels at home in it (“The Bird’s Nest”). And so, a long verse finds punctuation in a tastefully punchy chorus (“No Notifications”). The album also contains no fewer than three truly great guitar solos, including one from Meg Duffy’s Hand Habits on “Rollin’ Back The Dial”.
In closing, I offer three exemplary lyrics from the record to demonstrate that Gary has surveyed the mountain of good taste, climbed it, and now sinks the Dark Tea flag into its peak.

Nassau is the collaborative recording project from Brooklyn-based songwriters Justin Wilcox and Jeffrey Silverstein. Both seeking new creative outlets following respective projects in Baltimore and Chattanooga, the duo formed in late 2015 out of a mutual respect for raw, honest music. Sitting on a handful of riffs and half-songs, material would soon actualize for Hoss (2016), their debut EP of tranquil ambient/folk for Fire Talk Records.
Heron, the group’s first proper LP, sees the duo hitting their stride. Recorded, mixed, and produced by Wilcox at his home studio in South Williamsburg, the album explores new territory both sonically and thematically. Taking a far more deliberate and careful approach to writing, the album centers on the concept of change and balance- the Heron often representing an ability to progress and evolve in folklore. A warm, full-bodied sound envelopes each track giving breathing room for interweaving guitar lines, meditative rhythms and Wilcox’s gentle vocal delivery. Relying only on guitars, drum machines, and synth, the duo capitalize on using ambient textures as a base layer for each of these 8 beautiful tracks.
