Hannah Frances Unveils New Single/Video, "Life's Work," From Nested in Tangles !
Today, Hannah Frances — the virtuosic composer, vocalist, guitarist, and poet — releases her new single/video, “Life’s Work,” from her forthcoming album, Nested in Tangles, out October 10th via Fire Talk. “Life’s Work” is one of two tracks on Nested in Tangles to feature production and arrangement contributions from Daniel Rossen (of Grizzly Bear), who first connected with Frances when she offered to sell merch for him through Instagram DM. The pair quickly forged a connection, and naturally found themselves entrenched in collaboration soon after. The resulting “Life’s Work” is one of the most striking cuts on Nested in Tangles, as Frances ponders familial resentment and resolving that “learning to trust in spite of it is life’s work.” With bursts of trombone, acoustic and electric guitar and bass, cello and piano, “Life’s Work” is a cinematic ode to the resilience of the human spirit.
“‘Life’s Work’ is a haywire and whimsical exploration of familial rupture and the impacts of growing up in a dysfunctional home,” Frances says of the track. “Featuring arrangements by Daniel Rossen and trombone by Andy Clausen, there’s a touch of theatrical gallows humor to this song as a musical juxtaposition to the interiority of pain that I am narrating. Learning to trust in spite of everything is our life’s work,” she continues. “Life’s Work” follows a pair of singles — the avant-garde journey of “Surviving You” and the wonderfully lush “Falling From and Further” — which have received glowing praise from Pitchfork, CLASH, The Line of Best Fit, The New York Times, Paste, Stereogum and more.
Hannah Frances will embark on a headlining US tour in support of Nested in Tangles this fall, including a triumphant hometown return to Chicago, alongside stops in Brooklyn, Philadelphia, Washington DC, and more. Frances is currently amidst an European tour supporting Florist, and later this year will join Foxwarren for a string of west coast shows.
